TRANSCEND TREBLE ENSEMBLE

WHAT IS TRANSCEND? Transcend is a gender-inclusive treble vocal ensemble in New York City that aims at providing a supportive, creative place for singers of all gender identities to explore their voice and identity through communal music-making.


We perform a range of musical genres, and prioritizing the musical compositions and arrangements of composers from minority backgrounds. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Felix Graham and consists of 12-16 singers of a variety of levels and backgrounds.
Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in midtown Manhattan.  

AUDITIONS

transcend provides a supportive, welcoming space where SINGERS OF ALL LEVELS can feel comfortable sharing their voice with each other. We encourage supportive interaction, personal ownership in the group and we focus on creating and sustaining a sense of community as an ensemble.

ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE

PRACTICE: Practice videos of the pieces are generally provided, and you will be expected to review your music at home. If individual assistance is desired, you may meet with the director to review the music or arrange for small rehearsals with other members.

MUSIC LEARNING: You are not required to sight-read music to participate, though that is a useful skill we encourage everyone to pick up. However, we do ask that you have a strong musical ear and good pitch matching skills. 

DEMOCRATIC PARTICIPATION: Members are encouraged to participate in the function, philosophy and continued progression of the ensemble. In this vein, there are group-led rehearsals, voting and discussion on choir policies and opportunities for individual leadership.

DUES: We want everyone to be able to participate regardless of financial status, so there are no membership dues at the moment. In lieu of that, however, we ask that each member sell minimally five tickets to each performance to help defray the cost of the venue, accompanist and other expenses.

AUDITIONS

We do not hold formal auditions in the traditional sense. Prospective members are asked to join us for a rehearsal - both so that we can get to know you and you can get to know us and our style of learning.
